Dutton’s doors are open to new talent.
You do not need an agent in order for your submission to be read, as long as you follow our guidelines
- Dutton does not accept unsolicited manuscripts, only query letters. We will respond within three months of receipt of your letter if a self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE) is provided. If no SASE is provided, you will not receive any response.
- We prefer letters via snail mail. No e-mail queries, please.
- Do not try to query us over the phone. We need to see your pitch in writing order to determine whether it has promise.
- Please address your letter to a specific editor, or to:
Acquisitions Dutton Children’s Books
345 Hudson Street
New York, New York 10014
- If you are invited to submit your manuscript, please send it to the address above, with the added line: Requested Material.
- Multiple submissions are ok, as long as you are not simultaneously submitting to the other hardcover imprints at Penguin Young Readers Group (Dial, Philomel, Putnam, Razorbill, Viking). We don’t bid against each other. You are free to submit an idea to Dutton that has been turned down by one of the other Penguin imprints.
- You can expect to hear from us within three months of receipt if your manuscript if an SASE is provided. If no SASE is provided, you will not receive any response, even if you request that we recycle your manuscript.
- We prefer to receive manuscripts via snail mail. No e-mail submissions, please.
- Your manuscript should be typed, double-spaced, in 12-point font. Be sure to keep a copy of it. You do not need to submit illustrations along with your picture book manuscript, unless you are a professionally-trained artist sending us your dummy. It is our job to match picture book texts with illustrators. Never send us original photographs or artwork.
- If you are an illustrator looking for an assignment, please send art samples, in hard copy form only, to the art director for her files, at the address below. Please include your website address. Do not submit original art.
